Do I need a domain name?

A domain name is an address on the internet displayed in a human friendly manner. While websites can be found without using a domain name, the use of a domain name makes it much easier for people to visit your site. For example, you may use google.com, but if you didn't use the domain name google.com you would have to enter 209.85.171.100 into your browser to visit this search engine. google.com is much easier to remember than 209.85.171.100.

Domain names are generally supplied on a "first come first served" basis (With the exception of .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domain names which have specific restrictions to registration). They cannot be purchased permanently, but are registered for a period of between 1 and 10 years at a time. Once you have registered a domain name, you can renew your domain when it nears expiry without fear of anyone else taking control of your domain name. Once a domain name has expired you have a short time to renew the domain before it becomes available to the public again.

There are different types of domain available to register, the type of domain you choose is dependant upon what you would like to use the domain name for:
  • co.uk Ideal for UK companies.

  • org.uk Designed for UK non profit organizations

  • me.uk For personal websites in the UK.

  • ltd.uk and plc.uk Reserved for Limited and Public Limited companies in the UK.

  • eu Companies and organisations based within the European Union.

  • com For commercial websites, this domain name does not specify the country type so is very useful for international companies.

  • org For international Organisations, the international variant of .org.uk.

  • net Short for InterNET, a varied international domain name used for a variety of uses.

  • us Used for US based companies and organisations.

  • biz An International domain name used for all business types, rather than just commercial entities.

  • info An international domain name used for displaying information regarding a subject. Not used for commercial websites.

  • name An International domain name for individual or personal websites.

  • ca Used for Canadian websites and enterprises.

  • mobi Specific domain name for mobile phone users. This domain name is usually used to provide an alternative website for mobile phone users in conjunction with another domain name.

  • tv Used by media companies and anyone relating to Television.

Tip: More information regarding domain name types and prices can be found on our website at: http://www.webelite.org/domains/index.php.

You are not restricted to having one domain name per website. To increase your web presence you can register multiple extensions and spellings of the same domain name, then point each one to your website.

Can I register a .ltd.uk (Limited) domain name?

This is no problem, however your domain must be the same as your company name, ie:

Your company is called Joes Computer Shop Limited, we will then have to register joescomputershop.ltd.uk

In order for us to register a .ltd.uk domain then you will also need to provide us with your full company name and registered company number.

Unfortunately due to Nominet's rules we can not register jcs.ltd.uk or anything apart from joescomputershop.ltd.uk. For further details of this, please see:

com, net, org, info, biz, tv, name, eu domain registration

We register and renew the above domain names for one year at a time.
To make it easier to manage these domain names, we allow you to extend the domain registrations to a maximum of two years.

How it works

Because we only process one year registrations, we extend your registration using the following steps:

1. You request the registration extension and pay the additional registration fee.
2. Your domain's renewal date stays the same in the registry, but your extended renewal date will show in your StreamlineNet account.
3. On the renewal date, our systems automatically renew the domain for a further year.

Important: If you move the domain to another provider, before we make the automatic renewal, you will lose the second year's registration fee and your registration will not be extended.

Why a new domain name may not be active

It can take up to 72 hours before all internet service providers are aware of the existence of your new domain name. During this period, your domain name may be registered and pointing towards your webhosting account, but still not be accessible. This is a property of the internet and is not anything that we have any control over. During this time, although you may not be able to access your website.

If you order a domain and the registration is not listed in a Whois search please send us a support ticket via your account control panel.

If the registration has failed and you already own the domain name we can transfer your domain and activate hosting. Alternatively, if the domain has already been registered by someone else please send up a ticket containing an alternative name for us to register on your behalf.
